Kalighat paintings emerged as a contemporary art around the time of Indian independence close to the Kali Mandir area in Bengal. These were painted by the poor painters called "Pats" as souvenirs for the pilgrims to the temple and often made wry, witty satires on the contemporary social life of Bengal at that time. Sadly, their value was realized long after real talent was replaced by commercial substitutes.
