The Story of Eid ul-Adha

Eid ul-Adha commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God. As Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead, rewarding Ibrahim's devotion.

The festival coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. While millions perform Hajj, Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid or Bakra Eid in India.

The sacrifice (Qurbani) symbolizes submission to God's will and the spirit of sharing - with one-third of the meat given to the poor, one-third to relatives and friends, and one-third kept for the family.
