The Struggle for Freedom
India's independence was the culmination of nearly 200 years of resistance against British colonial rule. From the 1857 revolt to Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent movements, millions sacrificed for freedom.
At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his iconic "Tryst with Destiny" speech: "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom."
Unlike Republic Day where the President unfurls the flag, on Independence Day the flag is hoisted from the bottom up, symbolizing the raising of the nation from colonial rule to freedom.
