The Birth of the Republic

On January 26, 1950, India adopted its Constitution, transforming from a British Dominion into a sovereign democratic republic. This date was chosen deliberately as it was on January 26, 1930, that the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) as its goal.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution, led the drafting committee that created one of the world's longest written constitutions. The document guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens and establishes India as a secular, socialist, democratic republic.

The first Republic Day parade was held in 1950, witnessed by President Rajendra Prasad and attended by Indonesia's President Sukarno as the first chief guest. Since then, the parade has become a symbol of India's unity, diversity, and strength.
