The Lord of the Universe
The Jagannath Temple in Puri is one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in India and one of the four Char Dham sites. Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the temple rises 65 metres above the town and is visible from far away.
The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival), where the deities are placed on massive wooden chariots and pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees. The English word "juggernaut" derives from this tradition.
The temple kitchen is the largest in the world, with over 500 cooks preparing food for 100,000+ devotees daily. The Mahaprasad is considered sacred and is cooked in earthen pots using traditional methods, believed to be blessed by Goddess Lakshmi.
