The Sacred Shakti Peetha
Shree Naina Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell when Lord Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra dismembered her. According to legend, the eyes (naina) of the Goddess fell here, giving the temple its name.
Perched at an altitude of 1,219 metres on a triangular hillock in the Shivalik ranges, the temple offers breathtaking views of the Gobind Sagar Lake below. The present structure was rebuilt after the 1905 Kangra earthquake.
The temple holds special significance during the Navratri festivals when lakhs of devotees undertake the pilgrimage. A unique tradition involves offering chunris (red scarves) to the Goddess.
