The Largest Temple Complex
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is foremost among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the first and most important of the eight self-manifested shrines (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras) of Vishnu.
Spanning 156 acres with 81 shrines, 21 gopurams, 39 pavillions, and numerous small water bodies, it is often described as the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. The temple is an island, bounded by rivers Kaveri and Kollidam.
The temple's history spans over 2,000 years, with contributions from the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara rulers. The Rajagopuram, completed in 1987, took 400 years to build.
