The Divine Feminine
According to Hindu mythology, when Goddess Sati immolated herself in her father Daksha's yajna fire, Lord Shiva was inconsolable. He picked up her body and began his cosmic dance of destruction (Tandava).
To stop the destruction, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember Sati's body. The 51 pieces fell at different locations across the Indian subcontinent, each becoming a Shakti Peetha.
Each Shakti Peetha has a Shakthi shrine (representing the body part) and a Bhairava shrine (Shiva as the protector). Pilgrimage to these sites is believed to grant immense spiritual power and blessings.
