About the Destination

The Rome of the East

Old Goa, once a thriving capital larger than Lisbon or London, was the jewel of Portuguese India from the 16th to 18th centuries. At its peak, it had over 200,000 inhabitants and was called "Golden Goa" and the "Rome of the East."

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves some of the finest examples of baroque architecture in Asia. The churches and convents here reflect the religious zeal and artistic patronage of Portugal's colonial era.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, housing the remains of St. Francis Xavier, draws millions of pilgrims annually. The Se Cathedral, Church of St. Francis of Assisi, and other monuments together tell the story of Goa's transformation under Portuguese rule.
