The Birthplace of Buddhism
Sarnath, known as Isipatana in ancient times, is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Here, in the Deer Park, he preached his first sermon to five companions.
This momentous event, known as "Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta" (Setting the Wheel of Dharma in Motion), laid the foundation of Buddhism as a world religion. The site flourished for over 1,500 years as a center of learning.
Emperor Ashoka erected several monuments here in the 3rd century BCE, including the famous Ashoka Pillar with its lion capital, which today serves as India's national emblem.
