Venice of the East
Udaipur, founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, is often considered India's most romantic city. Built around a series of artificial lakes and surrounded by the ancient Aravalli hills, the city is a masterpiece of urban planning.
The city rose to prominence after Maharana Udai Singh II moved his capital here from Chittorgarh. Since then, it has been the seat of the Mewar dynasty, one of the oldest and most prestigious royal families in India.
Today, Udaipur perfectly balances its royal heritage with modern tourism. The old city's narrow lanes hide art galleries, boutique hotels, and rooftop restaurants with mesmerizing lake views. It's no wonder the city has featured in numerous Bollywood films and was a filming location for the James Bond movie Octopussy.
