Recognition

GI Tagged (2005)

Channapatna, a small town 60 kilometers from Bangalore, has been India's "toy town" for over two centuries. The craft was introduced during the reign of Tipu Sultan, who invited Persian artisans to train local craftsmen in lacquerware techniques. Today, the town is home to thousands of artisans producing millions of toys annually.

What makes Channapatna toys special is their eco-friendly nature. The toys are made from Hale mara (ivory wood), shaped on traditional lathes, and coated with natural lac mixed with vegetable dyes. This makes them completely safe for children, even if mouthed. The vibrant colors — red, yellow, green, and blue — are achieved without any synthetic chemicals, embodying sustainable craftsmanship centuries before it became a global concern.
