Kanjeevaram silk sarees are India's most celebrated handwoven sarees, produced in the ancient temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Legend attributes their origin to Sage Markanda, the master weaver of the gods, whose descendants settled in Kanchipuram.

What distinguishes Kanchipuram sarees is their technique of weaving the body and border separately before interlocking them together - a process called korvai. This allows for contrasting colors and designs, creating the signature look of these luxurious sarees.

A genuine Kanchipuram saree uses only pure mulberry silk and real zari (gold or silver thread). The intricate weaving can take anywhere from a few days to several months, depending on the complexity of the design.
