The Story of Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya, meaning "eternal third," falls on the third lunar day of the bright half of Vaishakha month. The word "Akshaya" means imperishable or eternal, signifying that any venture begun on this day will continue to grow and prosper.

According to Hindu mythology, this is the day when Treta Yuga began, Lord Parasurama was born, and the sage Vyasa began composing the Mahabharata. It is also believed that the Ganges descended to Earth on this day.

The tradition of buying gold stems from the belief that gold purchased on Akshaya Tritiya will never diminish and will bring continuous prosperity. For Jains, this day marks when the first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, broke his year-long fast with sugarcane juice.
