The Path to Enlightenment

Prince Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini around 563 BCE to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. Despite a sheltered life of luxury, he encountered the suffering of old age, sickness, and death, prompting his spiritual quest.

After years of ascetic practices and meditation, Siddhartha attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, becoming the Buddha, meaning "the awakened one." He spent the next 45 years teaching the Dharma across the Indian subcontinent.

Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak, is recognized by the United Nations as an international day of observance. The day reminds followers of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path - Buddha's core teachings on ending suffering.
