The Legend of Karwa Chauth
The most popular legend tells the story of Queen Veervati, who became weak during her fast and was tricked by her brothers into breaking it early by showing her a false moon. Her husband immediately fell ill. Through her devotion and prayers to Goddess Parvati, she saved him.
Another story involves Karwa, a devoted wife whose husband was attacked by a crocodile. She tied the crocodile with a sacred thread and threatened Yama, the god of death, to release her husband. Impressed by her devotion, Yama blessed the couple with a long life.
Today, many couples celebrate mutually, with some husbands also fasting for their wives, transforming the festival into a celebration of mutual love and commitment in modern marriages.
