The Meaning of Michhami Dukkadam
"Michhami Dukkadam" is a Prakrit phrase meaning "May all my improper actions be inconsequential." On Samvatsari, Jains reach out to family, friends, and even strangers to seek forgiveness for any harm caused, intentionally or otherwise.
The practice stems from the Jain belief that karma accumulates through our actions, thoughts, and words. Seeking forgiveness helps release karmic bonds and purifies the soul on its path toward liberation (Moksha).
Paryushana literally means "abiding" or "coming together." During this time, Jain monks and nuns stay in one place, and laypeople intensify their spiritual practices, creating a period of heightened religious observance.
