The Philosophy of First Sight
The Vishu Kani tradition is based on the belief that the first thing you see on new year's day sets the tone for the entire year. By carefully arranging auspicious items, families ensure their first vision is one of abundance and divinity.
The eldest member of the family wakes before dawn to light the lamp and then wakes each family member one by one, covering their eyes and leading them to see the Kani. This ensures everyone's first sight is equally auspicious.
Vishu marks the astronomical new year when the sun enters Mesha Rashi (Aries). It coincides with similar new year celebrations across India - Baisakhi in Punjab, Bihu in Assam, and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.
